 Liposomes were first described by British haematologist Dr. Bangham. They are spherical vesicles with concentric phospholipid bilayers that are formed spontaneously in aqueous solution and can be prepared from natural phospholipids or synthetic lipids. Liposomes have many advantages such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, protecting encapsulated agents from metabolic degradation and ability to entrap both lipophilic and hydrophilic drugs. Liposomes can be used as a vehicle for administration of nutrients, cosmetics and pharmaceutical agents.
