This book examines history and educational development since pre-colonial time and traces the genesis and consolidation of western education in East Africa looking at some selected issues at different educational levels, namely primary, secondary and higher educational cycles. The book further highlights policies which shaped and guided some educational practices within each particular East African countries. The rise and consolidation of English Medium Schools particularly in Tanzania is narrated as a special case and in the other East African countries of Kenya and Uganda a brief description is also attempted where English overrides Kiswahili in terms of domains of use is briefly highlighted.
