Each term, as many as half or more of all US collegestudents who enroll in college level algebra coursesfail to complete or earn a passing grade. Some ofthese learners are also online learners. In responseto both concerns about retention and success, thisbook provides a study which investigates onlineperformance in this important gateway course.Designed as a study of over five hundred learners inan online college algebra course over threesemesters, it explores the inter-relationships amonginstitutional and learner variables, and attrition,failure, and success. This two-phase,quantitativestudy investigated the relationship between learnercharacteristics, evidence of preparedness, andlearner performances in ten- or fifteen week coursesfrom a community college virtual consortium. Usingstudent data, the analyses included both correlationsand step-wise regressions to investigate therelationship of learner characteristics andpreparation to final course performance.
