This marked a disjointedexperience as optimism for the future gave way todisenchantment. With the ratification of the NationalIndustrial Recovery Act in 1933 and the NationalLabor Relations Act in 1935, hundreds of thousands ofworkers across the United States became unionmembers. The euphoria that this initial burst ofunionization created, however, could not be sustainedthroughout the post-World War II years. The Cold War,McCarthyism and later the onset ofde-industrialization ushered in new phases in workingclass history marked by the gradual ineffectivenessof the working class to shape domestic policy.
