Описание
This provocatively "short" history of the shadow opens with a reappraisal of the contribution to the subject that can be teased out from comments by Pliny the Elder and Plato. Pliny's myth of the origin of art, which identifies the birth of artistic representation as having taken place in a Corinth potter's home, and Plato's myth of knowledge, set forth by the philosopher in the celebrated allegory of the cave, both deal with the shadow - the dark spot that by its presence confirms an absence. But the shadow can also be understood to be the present 'other' of the body, a fact enforced by the rule of light, so that the shadow can even be seen to be a form of self-representation. Indeed, according to J.C.Lavatar in the 18th century, it was the shadow of the face, not the face itself, that was the soul's true reflection. Формат: 15,5 см x 23,5 см.
