Painter, graphic artist, designer and publisher, Nikolayevsky has evolved an individual style of painting on the basis of the Lasierung (scumbling) technique which was used in Russian art in the Middle Ages. In 1977 Nikolayevsky graduated from the commercial advertising art school. He studied icon painting, took part in church mural painting and the production of sacred vessels, and did mosaics for public buildings. Since 1984 he has engaged in book design and collaborated with different publishing houses.
