Recent interest in new materials for applications in radio frequency provided strong impetus for measurement techniques to characterize associated electromagnetic material properties. For example, researches on novel engineered composites such as metamaterials, magneto-dielectrics, and various thin film composites, require accurate measurement of their permittivity, permeability and loss factors over a broadband. In many cases, however, traditional measurement techniques developed in the past are not readily available to characterize these new materials either due to measurable bandwidth limitation or stringent sample preparation requirements.
