The effects of pollution from industries on the receiving environment are manifold and depend on the type of pollutant and concentration: ranges from aesthetic quality reduction to toxic metal bioaccumulation that in the long run is suspected of causing cancer. Pollutants released from tannery are rich in carcinogenic chromium (VI). These industries should have to handle toxic pollutants either by recycling valuable components back to production processes, by altering it in to non toxic form or by safely damping it in an engineered landfill. The treatment of chrome can be carried out by applying physical, chemical or biological unit processes.
