 The essays are a compilation of the author's observations on contemporary Japan set in the context of the triple disasters of March 2011. The essays bear a distinct mark of a social scientist from the developing world who is intrigued by the "orderliness" of Japanese society. The forces behind this all- pervasive orderliness in the everyday lives, society and cities in Japan are located in the micro unit of the locality. Local governance, neighourhood associations and renewed volunteerism in the post March 2011 scenario contribute significantly to the challenges of contemporary Japan like disaster preparedness, care for the elderly, safety and security and fostering community relations.
