The rights based approaches to development are based on international human rights principles as an integral way of conducting sustainable development. The United Nations has urged all development agencies to integrate human rights principles into development programming. This study assess as to whether rights based approaches to development have reached key areas of volunteer management in Volunteer Service Oversees. The assessment involved VSO volunteer managers and ex-volunteers as respondents. It is based on data which was collected through in-depth interviews and literature reviews. The purposive sampling procedure was used during data collection exercise. The study concludes that rights based approaches should be strategically designed within volunteer management to meet specific objectives and must be consistent with organisation framework.
