Nepal have 9 wetlands of which Koshi Toppu Wildlife Reserve covers about 50.79% of areas that of total land covers by wetlands in Nepal. It covers the area of 175 sq kilometers. This was gazette as a protected area in 1976 under the National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1973. Established with an aim of preserving the last remaining population of wild buffalo and maintaining the pristine natural environment of the area.
