In most industries especially in developing countries, effluent analysis is limited to physico-chemical parameters with little or no emphasis on carcinogenic organic compounds. This is either because of the complexity and high cost of analyzing organic compounds or lack of knowledge of the risks involved with the presence of carcinogenic organic compounds in industrial effluents. Furthermore, environmental regulations in most developing countries do not adequately address carcinogenic organic compounds and therefore, monitoring becomes very poor.
