Among phosphorus containing pharmaceutical compounds, bisphosphonates is a very important class. Therapeutic uses of bisphosphonates include maagement of malignancy-associated hypercalcemia, treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and cancer. Bisphosphonates, as a group of active pharmaceutical compounds, generally "give headache" to analytical chemists. The two phosphonic groups per molecule lend a strongly ionic character and increased polarity to these compounds.
