One of the agro-based industries of India - sugar industry is playing a key role in economic development of the country. India, at the moment, has nearly 650 sugar mills which discharge huge amount of effluent per day with no or partial treatment. Several researchers have reported that sugar mill effluent has a high degree of pollution load and causes undesirable effects on biological system. Appropriate and pocket friendly treatment of the effluent is therefore the need of the hour. The sugar mill effluent, which is highly organic in nature, was utilized for this study.
