Silica is one of the most documented workplace contaminants. Multiple serious diseases and increased mortality have been associated with exposure to silica, making it a high priority public health concern in developing and developed nations. Silica intoxication particularly pulmonarytoxicity, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity is widely known. We have designed a non invasive method to determine the respiratory variables of unanesthetized rodents. Despite many years of research we are still far away from effective treatment against toxicity caused due to silica exposure. This review attempts a comprehensive account of recent developments in the research on silica toxicity particularly the role of oxidative stress/ free radicals in the toxic manifestations.
