The U.S.S R. once maintained condominium with the United States in the sphere of international relations; however, in 1991 the vast expanse that Moscow once controlled collapsed under the weight of its own internal, socioeconomic contradictions. This event was a watershed and its significance is twofold: it transformed the international system from a bipolar to a unipolar one, and it altered the geopolitical balance-of-power in the Caucasus and greater Caspian region in manifold ways, which will represent the focus of this study.
