A number of variables are analyzed that impact the degree of change in life satisfaction. The data is interpreted in light of social psychological theories of personal and political freedom affecting personal happiness. Overall, the results do not indicate a general increase in life satisfaction following the fall of communism, and the establishment of democratic governments.
