The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the anxiolytic-like effects of 6-Shogaol obtained from Ginger root(Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Zingiberacaceae) in mice using various behavioral paradigms.Goups of mice treated with doses of 6-Shogaol 20 mg/kg (i.p.) and 30 mg/kg(i.p.) and diazepam 1 mg/kg( i.p.) did not show any significant effects on locomotion. The same treatment increased in the percentage of time and entries into open arms of the elevated plus maze (EPM). 6-Shogaol at the doses of 20 and 30 mg/kg and DZ (1 mg/kg) induced a significant increase in the time spent in the light box without affecting other parameters. Same treatment induced a significant increase in the head dip counts and head dip duration which was similar to standard dose without affecting locomotion (no. of squares crossed).
