The pathological examination of foetuses provides data about the sensitivity and specificity of prenatal diagnostic work of clinicians, helps in genetic counselling, and informs about the prevalence of congenital diseases. There are no guidelines for the examination of foetuses in Hungary. The author''s foetopathologic diagnostic activity, performed since 1992, has been relied on the guidelines of the Royal College of Pathologists of the UK. The thesis summarizes the results of this activity, compares the efficacy of prenatal diagnostic work in two Hungarian universities, evaluates the prevalence of congenital malformations in western-southern and eastern-southern regions of Hungary, and suggests a protocol for foetal examinations.
