Numerous clinical and statistical studies have identified factors that increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Here, we made a detailed investigation of risk factors among men and women in different age groups using information from a large-scale health screening involving more than 97,000 Swedish subjects less than 75 years. The results of blood analyses and physical measurements carried out in the county of Varmland in 1962-65 were linked to data from the national cause of death register. During the follow-up period until 2005, a total of 11,586 men and 7,485 women were reported to have died from CHD. Logistic regression, and complementary Cox regressions, enabled identification of significant risk factors for all age groups, also those consisting of subjects less than 40 at the time of the health screening.
