Over the years, powerful transnational and national economic actors from corporations to national governments have "grabbed" land often in distant countries due to the convergence of the global food crisis, energy, finance, and environmental concerns. In Africa, this phenomenon directly affected communities like the Bakweris in Cameroon and the Endorois in Kenya. The claims made by these communities both at the national and regional levels under the umbrella of indigenous peoples' right over land uncovered serious shortcomings.
