Conviction, in law, is the verdict that results when a court of law finds a defendant guilty of a crime. The opposite of conviction is an acquittal which means not guilty or not proven to be guilty beyond reasonable doubt. In respect to the defendant, the end of any proceeding may have four possible outcomes. This may be conviction of the guilty, acquittal of the innocent, conviction of the innocent, or acquittal of the guilty. In fact the efficacy of criminal procedure is measured against the achievement of balanced result between protection of community against crime and the right of the suspect and the accused person.
