This work examine the origin anddevelopment of Kauranci and the activities ofKauraye (thugs) in Birnin (metropolis)Katsina.Kauranci (thuggry) in Katsina emerged and developedin the pre-colonial period. In pre-colonial Katsina,Thuggry is considered to be a circle of youth whosemain interest is to cherish and patronize theprofession for defense of polity, leisure as a wellas means of earning a livelihood. During the trans-Saharan Trade they served as security agents to thecaravans against the desert pirates and also asgeneral security agents to their states. While in thecolonial Katsina most of them served as NativeAuthority administration as administrators andsecurity agents for perpetuating Colonial rule.
