Two Fante merchants from Cape Coast, Joseph E. Ellis and Joseph E. Biney began the modern story of the Ashanti Goldfields Company (now Anglogold-Ashanti) when in March 1890, they laid claim to a concession in the Adanse and Bekwai traditional areas. As a result, scientific mining had a profound socio-politico-economic impact on the people of Adanse. This book in a historical narrative fashion, recounts the impact of the centuries of gold mining activity on the people of Adanse in particular and Ghana in general.
