El Salvador suffered from chronic scarcity of coins due to the lack of a minting facility and the counterfeiting of coins and cobs, which hindered trade and development. Coins from neighboring and other countries were used for many years, until The Central American Mint, limited, was established in 1892 which began producing official coins. The Author conducted a thorough search of factual information in all domestic and foreign depositories, on which to base this detailed historical account.
