The number of orphans is increasing day by day in India in general and in J&K in particular. Besides the trend of institutionalizing them is catching up in the society, which had its own traditional mechanism of rehabilitation and care/support. This study thus looks at the institutional impact on orphans and aim to find out the reasons for increasing number of orphans is Kashmir. The study showed that conflict is the major reason for increase in the number of orphan in Kashmir. Besides illness and accidents, lack of resources / poverty is the reason for institutionalization. The study also found nuclearlzation as another cause of orphans being institutionalize. The study points out that most of the orphans face psychological problems and almost all agreed that their adjustment in conventional society will be difficult.
