Establishment of the National Stock Echange (NSE) in early 1990s was a major catalyst for this change. Prior to this period, the Bombay Stock Exchange has dominated the scene for over a century. The technological advances in trading, settlement and clearing have aided the NSE in gaining a foothold and later dominating the trading scenario in India. This present study provides a historical account of the changes that occurred across the value chain of a stock market in early 1990s. Indian stock markets have seen major developments in institutional infrastructure as well as policy changes during this period.
