The factors that accounted for the failure of the railway system all through the post independence era were identified and discussed. The transfer of the management of the Nigerian railways to the Indian rail management company is the central focus of the study. The major findings of the study are that the failure of the Nigerian railways is largely attributed to governments to the failure of the government policies, insecurity and corruption by government officials.
