This book reviews the experience of the MENA region with poverty and human development since the mid-1980s. It finds evidence of stagnation in the rate of poverty reduction during this period combined with substantial improvement in non-income dimensions of poverty such as health and education indicators. The stagnation in income poverty reduction is a consequence of the stagnation of the region's economies during this period while the improvement in human indicators is likely due to several factors including improvement in the delivery of public health and education services. The first result highlights the importance of getting on to a higher growth track. The second suggests that, even in the absence of income growth, the health and education aspects of the living standards of the poor can be enhanced through attention to public service delivery.
