The effect of rare earth oxide doping, alumina and soda substitution for silica are discussed in terms of changes in measured hardness, compressibility, polarizability, polymerization of glass network and coordination of glass formers. Structural implications for measured photoelastic constants are also discussed. The strength of the holographic storage signal in these photonic glass systems is analyzed from the view point of variety of important factors, such as the number of the excited europium ions, high-energy phonons associated with Si-nonbridging...
