We believe that the central concern in introductory communication courses should be the communication theory that is derived from the study of communication in all the arenas (intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group, public speaking, and mass media). An understanding of the variables of the communication process, per se, makes one a more capable observer and participant in all communication encounters. Most introductory textbooks have treated communication as an interactive process. We, however, view communication as a transactional phenomenon. Because this book deals with these principal elements in the personal communication process, we feel that it is appropriate for various types of introductory courses. For example, an instructor who teaches communication with a particular focal point, such as interpersonal communication or public speaking, will find that the book gives the student a meaningful context for that perspective of communication.
