Описание
Museums and the Public Sphere investigates the role of museums in England, Hong Kong, Australia and the United States in engaging in public discourse, and gauges their ability to operate as sites of democratic public space. Many museums now draw on museological theory (new museology and more recently, critical museology), in the creation of their exhibitions. Museums and the Public Sphere allows for a vigorous engagement with international debates around the public sphere and democracy, which are highly relevant to, but not limited by, the discussion of these exciting case studies. Coming out of a general lack of interrogation of the term public both within museums and museum theory, where ?publicness? is wrongly conflated with the general concept of ?audience,? Museums and the Public Sphere considers whether the museum can effectively function as a critical democratic sphere and argues for an understanding of the public that is ?situated?, rather than generalized.
