Shortage of land due to population growth has forced farmers to cultivate steep slopes and shallow soils that are vulnerable to degradation. The livelihood problems in marginal land areas are mainly related to natural resources degradation and/or to severe constraints in the realization of potential benefits from natural resources. Knowledge of the distribution and types of LU/LC change are believed to be important resource base indicators with regard to land degradation and livelihoods.
