Meletij Smotryc'kyj viewed his JEVANBELIJE UCYTELNOJE (Homilary Gospel) as crucial for the "spiritual good" of the Ukrainian and Belorussian Christians of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth ("the Ruthenian nation"). In light of the fierce debate over the Union of Brest (1596), he saw the need for an Orthodox collection of Gospel passages and homilies that would supplant reliance on Polish Catholic and Protestant postils. To that end, he translated into Ruthenian a Church Slavonic collection of sermons on the Gospels, while simultaneously introducing formal revisions that allowed the work to compete with similar Polish texts. As a result, the JEVANBELIJE UCYTELNOJE, published in Vievis in 1616, is a key source for investigating the Orthodox-Catholic debate of the early seventeenth century and for tracing the development of the early Ukrainian literary language.
