The community including women beliefs that domestic violence is a private issue. Unwillingness to disclose violent experiences was common due to pressure to maintain family honour (siri’), and preserve the family structure for the sake of children, and the belief that it was inappropriate to disclose a husband’s violence publicly as well as the husband’s right to punish his disobedience wife. This book offers a new interpretation of a such understanding and shows that Al-Qur’an advocates marriage based on love and respect not violent.
